High school sophomore Linda Lan Phung aspires to travel the world and photograph her journey along the way. Phung dreams of seeing famous spots but also wants to familiarize herself with lesser-known remote areas.
Phung wants to see foreign cities and towns firsthand and learn about rich cultures. She would capture the details of her visits to each country with her camera. Phung believes that by traveling across the globe, she would learn various historical and cultural facts.
Traveling to countries would help Phung develop a deeper empathy for others. Through her visits, Phung would learn how people of different conditions and cultures strive for a life of happiness, and would photograph these moments of success or hardship.
Senior Kai Shimoko also enjoys traveling and finds learning about different customs of people interesting. “Traveling gives me a new perspective on life because when I visit someplace new, I put myself in other people’s shoes,” said Shimoko.
Phung has wanted to travel the world ever since she was young. She has rarely left the country, and yearns to see famous cities such as Paris and Barcelona along with remote places like la Rinconada, a small town in the Peruvian Andes.
Phung also plans on taking pictures of her journey and sharing them with the rest of the world. She loves photography, and wants to document her experiences so that the public can be aware of these regions. In fact, Phung will start a magazine that is only composed of pictures and captions that she takes during her travels.
Phung would focus on one country per magazine issue and compile varying photos of attractions, remote areas, and daily life to spread cultural awareness about each country. She would send the pictures to the editors electronically to be published since she would still be traveling abroad.
By doing this, Phung could educate people about the interesting facts and sites of each country, as well as offer a glimpse on people’s daily lives. Readers could contrast their daily lives and learn more about foreign countries while enjoying snippets of touristy attractions. It may inspire readers to travel to learn about other countries and cultures first-hand.
“I’ve traveled the world with my family, but seeing pictures of the citizens’ daily lives would be unique since I didn’t get to see that when I traveled,” said freshman Bianca Santiago.
